Many students of tango struggle through the learning process, often for years, without ever gaining a sense that they can perform their tango role with ease and satisfaction.
There are three prime reasons for this dilemma. Firstly, the tango is difficult to master -- it is a slow dance where precision, control, and musicality are extremely important. Secondly, students are impatient, and they want to advance to the ornaments, tricks and fancy steps before mastering the basics. Thirdly, many teachers cater to the desires of the students rather than to their actual needs.
There are several fundamental elements that are necessary to become a good tango leader and a good tango follower. Many of these elements are the same for both leaders and followers. Many of these are not difficult in themselves; however, they need time for the body and mind to absorb the correct habits and techniques so they become natural. When this happens, dancing tango at a higher level becomes easier and easier. The most difficult part of tango, in fact, are the "easy" elements that form the foundation of the dance.
Try a lesson with me, and I'll demonstrate tango's fundamental concepts to you. We explore these through experience -- learning to be sensitive to your feelings of balance, slowing down to experience changes of weight as a process rather than a single action, understanding how important relaxation, patience and breathing are to tango practice. With these, you will be making the first steps on the path to becoming a great social dancer of Argentine tango.
